New Music: AWKWORD – ‘Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy)’
New song, produced by ATG, off AWKWORD‘s 100% for-charity global Hip Hop project World View. Download in the HIGHEST, better-than-CD-quality sound, FREE or by electing to NAME YOUR OWN PRICE. All (100%) of the proceeds are being donated to The Nature Conservancy in the name of AWKWORD’s mother.
AWKWORD:
“Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy)” is the most important, personal song of my life…
I hope you all get something out of “Thank You (A Tribute To My Mommy)”, a song I wrote and recorded in honor of my mommy in the woodsy town she loves, Ridgefield, Connecticut.
My mommy is only 59 and, after first being diagnosed with breast cancer nearly 15 year ago, today I watch her dying, the cancer having metastasized beyond control.
I wrote and recorded all of the lyrics/vocals to “Thank You”. My friend, producer ATG, created the beat exclusively for my mother and me, and then mixed/mastered the song. And our family friend Noah (a professional musician and studio engineer) was kind enough to record me on the mic.
This collaboration produced what I believe demonstrates the positive power of Hip Hop — this is why I do what I do; and NO SONG has ever been MORE IMPORTANT to me. Yet, I can’t help but think my tribute only barely touches the surface in capturing all that my mother means and has meant to the people in her life as well as the plants, animals and insects all around her. She is Mother, Daughter, Sister, Social Worker, Chef, Activist, Intellectual, Listener, Leader, to the highest degree. She is the only person I’ve ever known who practices what she preaches, adheres always to morality, and even challenges my theory that there is no true form of altruism. And she is also “the person i fully knew, who’d always be there,” as I say in our song.
In my mother’s honor, as her son, as someone who has always admired — if not been in awe of — her, I present this song (streaming) to my family, friends and fans, as well as all those who have ever lost someone (especially due to cancer and metastatic breast cancer) they love, undoubtedly too early.

Song Lyrics
Thank you, mommy, i try to say the words calmly /
but im a little too sensitive, you helped make me an anomaly /
i cry on your shoulder, put my head in your lap /
think of all the fun we had, and how we’ll never get it back /
the sound of your laugh, feel of your hand on my back /
hiking through the woods, eating the lunch that we packed /
My biggest fan in the crowd, im still watching ya clap /
youre the angel on my shoulder, pushing me back to the track /
i woulda thought that be enough, for you to be saved /
maybe god wants a golf course, on that land that YOU saved /
Most little girls, they dream about guys with porsches /
you stared up at the ceiling imaginin carin for horses /
most popular chick, growing up, just like my sister /
You will always live on, in her voice, i hear your whisper.Thank you, mommy, for all the songs youve sung softly /
You put me to sleep, something now I do hardly /
Plus, also, think about it, you made me an emcee /
kinda awesome actually, you raised me, creatively /
You are my salve, my rock, you never give up /
I was a whole lot a trouble, pissed off, with bad luck /
You never got embarrassed, when I dressed like a punk /
Now you always check my status, hoping that I’m not drunk /
Mom, you created a beast, artists think for themselves /
Now I thank my lucky stars im at home while you’re not well /
Id forever hate myself if I turned to music and shrank /
I know its near the end now, i need a billion bars to thank /
You inspired me to act, you taught me how to think /
You showed me the arts, you see beauty in everything.Thank you, mommy, for all the truths you taught me /
In any conflict, I’ll always think about my mommy /
But its time to man up now, mom, im scared /
You were the person i fully knew, who’d always be there /
I can picture myself now, rooftop, screaming in the dark /
I cant imagine living a single minute without my heart /
But I promise to go on, for you and my seeds /
I promise to watch my money, and stay away from all that greed /
I promise to support pops, with anything he needs /
And my best friend, your daughter and me, we holdin down the tree /
Plus YOUR sister, together, reminiscing about your grace /
Passing pictures around, like kids, lovingly study ya face /
We suffer now, cuz we all lost like 30 years /
But mom thats 60+ years of greatness better than your peers.More Info on Breast Cancer

A final comment from AWKWORD:
The timing of the release of this song (mid holiday season) is not ideal in regard to the industry impact; however, I wanted this song out A MONTH AGO. I am so thankful my mommy had a chance to hear my tribute song for her, really understand and appreciate it, and reminisce with the slideshow I created to accompany it. And I just can’t wait any longer to share it with the world, whoever may be listening. Needless to say, even if it makes you cry, I hope you enjoy.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING (Select Writeups/Reviews):
Head over to his Bandcamp and show support.
If you tuned in for AWKWORD‘s first Booth feature, Doctor Doctor, you already know that the Big Apple repper’s all about his Bars & Hooks. On feature numero dos, the latest single off his forthcoming full-length, the emcee recruits a few equally dedicated neighbors—namely Sean Price, The Kid Daytona and The Incomparable Shakespeare—to drop hard-hitting verses over a smooth, flute-laced beat by Harry Fraud. Digging it? Then stay tuned for further details on AWKWORD’s World View LP, set to drop in 2012, with proceeds going to the Aim to Live charity.
It’s all about bars and hooks… AWKWORD is the brain, heart and soul behind World View, a global Hip-Hop project for charity, being released in 2012! Call it a revolution! Backed by the smooth sounds of Harry Fraud, AWKWORD rounds up fellow industry peers in Sean Price and The Kid Daytona for the mission with The Incomparable Shakespeare handling chorus duties!
After introducing himself to RefinedHype Nation with “Doctor, Doctor”, NYC representer AWKWORD is back with some simply dope “Bars & Hooks (Keep It Moving)”. There’s a lot to dig here. The Harry Fraud beat is solidly fundamental and The Incomparable Shakespeare delivers a nice hook, but ultimately this is a rappity rap track, so the real highlights are the rappity raps.
Seriously, I can’t remember the last time three emcees got on a track and all followed the same format – on “Two Words” they didn’t even last two verses – but Sean Price, AWKWORD and The Kid Daytona all come through with a variation of “I ain’t been the same since I ate paint chips” and “excessive e pills give you Christopher Walken mouth.” I’d love to know the story behind that, maybe AWK will fill us in below in the comments (hint, hint).
As a bonus, this is good music for a good cause. All proceeds from this track and AWK’s “World View” album, dropping in 2012, go to global hip-hop charity Aim to Live.

Oh, maaaan…this track is hot. I mean look at that title!
