New Audio: The “I” Freestyle x Cultural Hangover Radio Interview [FREE MP3s]
On September 1, I joined The Cult (DJ Reese, Add & Ciana Monet) for Cultural Hangover Radio at Montclair State University’s 90.3 FM Studio. The Cult and I chopped it up about:
- the origin of “AWKWORD” & “The People’s Champ”;
- my upbringing in Connecticut;
- my 100% for-charity global Hip Hop project, World View;
- what it’s like collaborating with Hip Hop legends; and
- more.
The chemistry was palpable, and the interview shifted seamlessly from comical to serious throughout.
Then, I freestyled for nearly 50 bars over the classic DJ Premier beat Jay-Z used for “So Ghetto”.
Here is the original CulturalHangover.com post. Below, I break it all down for your convenience.

Exclusive AWKWORD Interview with Dutch Indie Music Site PROTAILZ
From the Interview:
Today, I am closer than ever to completing this project, long in the making. There are even more artists and nations involved. And there are only a few more songs to finish. Then, thanks to my sponsors, I will be able to mix, master and distribute, hopefully demonstrating that you don’t need to rock jeggings or rap about your watch to be considered a Hip Hop success story.
PROTAILZ did an incredible job, asking unique questions that inspired me to say things I’ve never said before publicly, as well as cleanly designing their interview post with the questions and answers, along with my photos and videos.

Lyrics Now Posted for AWKWORD’s Do Something Freestyle
This is a jack move. I wrote and recorded this in an hour, with a bad studio set up, one night in September 2010. One of those inspirational flashes. About a year later (earlier this month), I felt like letting it go. And today, after hearing the feedback, I am sharing the lyrics. Please. Don’t get it twisted. Despite the informality, my verse is SERIOUS on multiple levels.
Click HERE to stream/download the song free, as well as NOW read the lyrics (spit heartfully and precisely, of course) that should be catching the full attention of Kanye West and Ski Beatz.

NEW, Expanded AWKWORD bio
Click on AWKWORD to view the bio!
Hip Hop was created out of disfranchisement, alienation and persecution (the blues), fueled by creativity, infused with rhythm and soul, and enhanced by innovation. It is at once (a) a protest song, a call for freedom through revolution (e.g., AWKWORD – “The People’s Champ“); and (b) a party song, a call for ‘freedom’ through the reclaiming of our own lives (e.g., AWKWORD ft. Whatzisface – “Cheers“). The history of the black American, product of slavery, descendant of Africa, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, is much like the history of the American Jew, product of the Holocaust, pogroms and the Inquisition, descendant of Palestine, Russia, Poland. Although the commercial success of rap music can be attributed to an increase in popularity amongst white, Christian suburbanites, the culture of Hip Hop’s home is in the ghetto. The first ghetto was inhabited by Jews in Europe — this is the source of the term. The ignorant — white and black — ask how AWKWORD got into Hip Hop. Get Your Mind Right: AWKWORD IS Hip Hop!…
